How are semi-rigid boats made?

How are RIB boats made?

RIB boats are becoming increasingly popular because of their versatility and ability to sail in a variety of conditions. However, few people know how these boats are made. In this article, we'll take a closer look at the process of making a semi-rigid boat.

The float

The first key element of any RIB boat is the float. The float is the part of the boat that provides buoyancy and stability in the water. Semi-rigid boat floats are made from a material called Hypalon or Neoprene (just like our repair fabrics!). These materials are renowned for their resistance to salt water, UV rays and chemicals. Floats usually consist of several compartments, so that if one compartment is damaged, the rest of the float will continue to provide sufficient buoyancy.

The hull

The next stage in the manufacture of a semi-rigid boat is the hull. Hulls are usually made fromfibreglass, carbon or a mixture of both materials.

The hull manufacturing process begins with the creation of a mould. The mould is generally made of wood or polystyrene foam. Once the mould is ready, layers of fibreglass and resin are applied to the mould to create the hull. Once the resin has hardened, the shell is removed from the mould and the finishing touches are applied.

The assembly

The float and hull are then assembled. The floats are attached to the hull using special rubber strips, called "boudins". The flanges are attached to the hull using special adhesive to ensure a complete seal.

The accessories

Once assembly is complete, the boat is fitted with all the necessary accessories, such as seats, consoles, fuel tanks, engines, propellers and navigation instruments.

Conclusion

It is important to note that building a RIB boat is a complex process that requires a high level of skill and expertise. RIB manufacturers employ skilled professionals to ensure that each boat is built to the highest quality standards.

In conclusion, RIB boats require meticulous and precise work to build. The combination of hard-wearing materials, advanced manufacturing techniques and technical know-how has resulted in semi-rigid boats that are durable, versatile and reliable.

Whether for fishing, diving, watersports or cruising, a RIB boat can offer years of fun and adventure!
